In mid-February, just prior to the Carnival festivities, Madeirans celebrate ‘Festa dos Compadres’ (Godfather Festival / Cronies’ Feast) which is a celebration of the Compadres lived with great enthusiasm and characterized by the presence of giant puppets. The fun consists of the ‘midwife’(giant puppet) who is given a public trial, accused of many infidelities and finally sentenced to death. She is then burned in public marks the end of yet another ritual.
