Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho (1869-1959) was a Portuguese fleet admiral, historian, mathematician and geographer. He was the author of several geographical and historical publications, many of which focused on the Portuguese discoveries and navigation. He also invented the sextant that bears his name and which made him an admired figure in world of aeronautics.
On March 22, 1921, Gago Coutinho, alongside fellowmen Sacadura Cabral, R. Bettencourt and Ortins Soubiran, embarked on a journey from Lisbon to Madeira to test out navigational systems and equipment created by both him and Sacadura Cabral. The aircraft used in the journey was a Hydro 408 Felixstowe F.3.
In 1922, Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral completed the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic.
