The Museum Casa da Luz was inaugurated on the
24th of November 1997 and has since enjoyed the visit of a considerable influx
of tourists. The museum was initially established to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the introduction of electricity
to Madeira.
The museum is a visual introduction to the evolution of the electrical
distribution and infrastructure in the Archipelago of Madeira.
It is particularly attractive as the visitor has the
opportunity to interact with various types of electrical equipment.
A large auditorium has also been built to accommodate spectators attending entertainment productions. Events are
advertised through posters which are put up throughout the streets of Funchal.
The museum is situated in the area formerly occupied
by the Thermal Centre of Funchal in the Old Part of Town, better known as Zona Velha.
The museum is open from
Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 -12.30 and from 14.00-18.00.
