Madeira Wickerwork

Madeira is well-known not only for its magnificent Nature and breathtaking views, but also for its local products such as Wickerwork. This industry began in the parish of Camacha, in 1850. Since that time, Camacha has been a focal point of attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Madeira willow grows in the damp valleys of the island. Between January and March, the strong yet delicate shoots are cut and left in water. The thin bark is then pulled off and gathered in bunches to dry. The willow is then boiled in water to achieve the flexibility required. Finally, the weaver's hands tame the willows stout resistance and create the most amazing works of art such as fruit holders and picnic baskets, suitcases, and even tables and chairs.
The craftsmen put all their creativity and talent in the creation of a true handicraft.
